My Story

From Musician to Artisan

I am Jonathan Matthew Hammond, a qualified piano tuner and technician. My intrigue with piano technology began with a family heirloom upright piano; I learned to play on this instrument in childhood. She was wheezy and creaky, yet full of a warm and characterful tone. From then on, I developed a fascination with the piano as an instrument. I was forever behind the piano in venues, studios & public spaces.

I became a young musician, a piano man at heart

This journey taught me not just to admire the piano, but to truly feel what it has to offer. I’ve come to honour music in all its genres, traditions, and forms—believing in its quiet power to move us in ways nothing else can.

I knew my next steps were in artisanship; that I might care for the instrument. I trained with various institutions and mentors, first training at the esteemed Piano Technology School in Rugby, Warwickshire. By the guidance of Steve Droy, RPT, whose expertise and enduring contributions have significantly shaped the evolution of the piano trade, I completed intensive training in the fields of piano tuning, regulation, repairs and voicing techniques. This education laid a strong groundwork for my continued pursuit of excellence in the art and science of piano tuning.

As an artisan, I intend to serve communities

making pianos accessible to all

As pianists, insofar as touch and tone, we need our piano to be as responsive to the sensitivity of our fingers, as our emotions are to our interpretation of the music. My duty to quality artisanship goes past my initial training that I may bring out this responsiveness in the piano for the player.

I received training in Grand Piano Regulation from Head Technician Doug Chapman at the Royal College of Music. This ensures that I can now care for and ‘make regular’ to a high standard; pianos whose mechanisms have become victims of overplaying, distortion by humidity, by heat or even by time itself. Furthermore, I completed an apprenticeship period under the prestigious Oxford-based piano sales and restoration firm ‘Roberts Pianos’. This enables me to carry myself with ease in a showroom environment and gave me invaluable insight into the tuning, repair and regulation of rarer ‘patent actions’ in high-quality German piano manufacturers.

Moreover, I am a proud member of the Institute of Musical Instrument Technology (IMIT), an affiliation which underscores my commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and continually refining my expertise.

Today, I am forging my own pathway

I lead with a custodian’s attitude towards piano culture, and with advocacy insofar as access to the instrument and to music education itself. I deliver a bespoke, client-focused service, dedicated to meeting each individual's unique needs in pursuit of their most expressive performance and musical fulfilment.
